What Is Implant Profile?

Implant profile describes the relationship between an implant's base width (how wide it is from side to side) and its projection (how far it sticks out forward) for a given volume. Two implants with identical cc volumes can have completely different shapes — a low profile implant spreads the volume wide and flat, while a high profile implant concentrates the same volume into a narrower, more projecting shape. The right profile depends on your chest width, desired projection, and the aesthetic goal you're pursuing.

Low Profile

Low profile implants have a wide base and less forward projection relative to their volume. They suit: wider chest frames where a wide base implant fills the chest wall more completely; women seeking a more natural, modest silhouette; and cases where the goal is chest wall coverage rather than projection. They are less commonly used for cosmetic augmentation than moderate or high profile.

Moderate and Moderate-Plus Profile

Moderate profile implants are the most commonly placed — they balance base width and projection for a natural-appearing result on most body types. Moderate-plus profile sits between moderate and high, providing more projection than moderate while not being as narrow as high profile. Most first augmentations use moderate or moderate-plus profile implants.

High and Extra-High Profile

High and extra-high profile implants have a narrower base and significantly more forward projection per cc volume than lower profile implants. They suit: narrower chest frames where a wide base implant would extend beyond the natural breast boundaries; women seeking maximum projection and "stacked" appearance; and very large implant augmentations where a narrower base is more anatomically appropriate. Extra-high profile implants are common in large and extreme augmentation where the volume requires concentrated projection.
