Why Lighting Is Everything
For large bust photography, lighting determines more than almost any other variable. The key principles: Soft, diffused light (from a large softbox, window light on an overcast day, or a shoot-through umbrella) creates even, flattering illumination that shows shape without harsh shadows. Side lighting from a 45-degree angle creates beautiful three-dimensional shape and texture while keeping the image from looking flat. Avoid harsh direct flash — it flattens and overexposes in a way that is particularly unflattering for large busts. Continuous LED lights allow you to see the effect in real time, making them excellent for self-shooting.
Angle and Perspective
Camera angle dramatically changes the apparent size and shape. Shooting from slightly below (camera below eye level, angled upward) emphasises the bust and creates a sense of presence — this is the most commonly used angle in professional busty content photography. Shooting from above (camera above, angled down) can emphasise the décolletage and face while still showing the bust in the frame. Straight-on shooting is less flattering than slight low angle for most subjects. Three-quarter angles (subject turned slightly rather than fully facing camera) create more three-dimensional, visually interesting compositions than straight-on.
Poses That Work
Poses that work well for large bust photography: arms raised or behind the head (opens the chest and creates body length); leaning slightly forward (creates dramatic décolletage); reclined positions (changes the shape of the bust in interesting ways); and poses that create waist definition (emphasising the contrast between bust and waist is a classic compositional approach). Avoid poses where the arms create horizontal lines across the torso — these cut the figure and are rarely flattering.
Camera Settings and Equipment
For indoor studio shooting: ISO 400–800 (lower with plenty of light), f/2.8–f/5.6 for portrait-style depth of field, shutter speed 1/100s or faster. A 50mm or 85mm prime lens on a full-frame camera (or equivalent on crop sensor) provides the most flattering focal length for body and portrait photography. Avoid wide angle lenses close to the subject — they create distortion that is rarely flattering.
